Second day of filming - 2/12/10

For our second day of filming, we traveled to Hampstead Heath again to film the chase sequence. We decided to cast another male as the man chasing train train track tracey to help distiguish between the performance and the narrative. We also waited until it snowed as the snow gave the chase sequence more of a dreamy, mystical feel.

Overall the shot was successful and we took into consideration the things we learnt from our last day of filming such as camera framing.

Change of plan

Originally, the lead singer of Oats was going to be the man chasing Tracey in the music video but to help distinguish between performance and narrative, we cast another man to the lead singers role. We wanted him to fit the indie genre and be photogenic. A number of males fit the description but in the end this is who we chose to play the character.

First Day of Filming - 10/11/10

The shoot today went extremely well. I felt the team worked together well and the storyboard and treatment helped us stay on track. The only problems we had was that we only had 1 camera to work with. If we had a second camera, it would give us the freedom to get more shots and also save us a lot of time. We also could have improved on the framing of the video but we can rectify this when we shoot again. Here are a couple of photos taken on the first day of filming.

Im looking forward to the next day of shooting, where we will capture the chase sequence.

Costumes

Representation of Train Track Tracey:

Through analysis of the lyrics and also our own interpretation of how Tracey should look like, we came up with a specific style and demeanour she would embody. The line shooting looks between the seats would imply she is quite shy and introverted. This is reinforced by the line you were a shy princess. As for clothing,  we wanted her to be seen as innocent and unassuming by putting her in a white dress. We used the line just like the white dress she was wearing to help us with our decision. The song also talks a lot about Tracey saying she'll stay but in the end leaving. This will be seen in the chase sequence, where the lead singer almost catches her but she slips away.We also decided that she will be wearing minimal make up to make her look more natural.

Representation of Lead Male:

We decided that the male would embody the indie genre and dress in a way which reflects it. He will be wearing skinny jeans, a hoodie and a light denim jacket. Here is  picture of his costume.

Representation of the band:

We want the band to look a certain way, which will be identifiable as indie. To achieve this they will wear clothes that are typical for bands in the indie genre. This includes skinny jeans, shirts and hoodies.

Influences for Cd Cover

Deaf Havana - Smiles All Round


This cover stood out to me due to the light colours and it simplicity. Even though there is only a tree and the bands name on the cover, i feel it looks better than a more complex cover would.

Futures - Holliday


The girl running away on the cover is very similar to the theme of our video. I also like the fact that she is basically running away from the audience and you cannot see her face. This makes it more mysterious and encourages people to find out why she's running and what from.

Misery Business - Paramore

This Paramore cover just shows the band in front of a white background. It is very basic but the fact that they are standing very close together creates a unity within the band. I also like the scribbling effect of the song name in the top right hand corner. It is a unique way to make the name stand out.

This cover shows the band mid-performance which i think is a cool idea. It seems more 'real' that a band posing on a cover.

Magazine advert research

As well as creating a Digipack, we have to design a magazine advertisement. I looked at some existing magazine adverts to see what conventions they follow and also to help me with my adverts layout.

This advert doesnt show the artist and instead showcases the album artwork. It also gives reviews from Q and the gaurdian newspaper.

Typical features of the adverts include the artists name and single/album name, picture of the artist, ratings out of 5, short reviews, release date and where it will be available to buy.

Conventions of album covers

Front Cover: Album name, Band name, either a picture of the band or an abstract image relating to the album.
Back Cover: Track listing, barcode, copyright infomation.
Insert: Lyrics, Pictures of the band, Thank you letters.


To help me come up with ideas for my own digipack, I will analyse Paramore's Riot CD. It has a recurring theme that appears all over the CD which is the hand-written Riot.

Back Cover




The back cover shows a black and white image of the band and also carries across the theme of hand-written text and the riot! in the back ground. The sides of the cover contains the name of the band and album. These strips on the outside will become the sides of the physical album. 


Insert



Each member of the band chose their favourite song to write the lyrics in the insert which added a personal touch to the CD. Also, the whole insert is in black and white which is not seen very often.

Front Cover



The band and writing are all in black and white except the few Riots that are in red. this makes the cover look very graphic and draws attention to the album name.

Casting

Train Track Tracey

Our music video requires the casting of Train Track Tracey who is the lead singers "dream girl" in the narrative. As a group, we decided that Tracey would be a young Caucasian women with an indie style. To find the person that best represented this, we photographed a number of girls who fit the description.

Female 1

We decided that this female didn't fit the indie genre and did not chose her to play TTT.

Female 2

We felt that this female wasn't particularly what we were looking for so we will not cast her.

Female 3

We decided that this female will play Train Track Tracey as she fits the description and is also very photogenic which will come across well on film.

Extras
As we are filming at train station, we had to make the decision whether there would cast actors to stand  with our main characters. To portray the lead singer as a typical indie individual, who doesn't conform to mainstream ideals, we could potentially surround him with middle aged men in suits.

This man fits the description we previously agreed on but through further discussion, we decided that we will have no men in suits at the train station. There will only be a few people around which will isolate the lead singer and Tracey at the station and make there meeting more significant.

Location

The location we are using for our music video is Hampstead Heath. To make sure the location was suitable for shooting, we took photos and carried out a risk assesment.

We wanted our music video to have a mystic, dream-like feel to it and the secluded pathways and over hanging trees create this. It also had to be easily accessible as we had to bring the instruments/technical equipment with us. This would be possible as there is a main road that runs along the forest but is not visible.

SC back to the real world (lead male is standing where the music video began) SC to a wide shot of male walking around station. TTT comes out of station and video ends just as the male recognises her. (diagetic sound of buses in background)

Here is our final treatment after making revisions on it based on our feedback. 1 problem we came across with the original treatment was the permission we needed to shoot on the train. We felt obtaining this would be troublesome so we decided to film just out side of the station. We also made the treatment a little bit clearer so it would be easier to follow once we begin filming.

We have created a visual accompaniment to our treatment in the form of a storyboard. This will be beneficial when we come to shooting and is the most effective way to plan out our music video.

SC to a GRAPHIC MATCH of lead singers eyes closing then opening. The lead singer slowly opens his eyes to find himself lying in a forest. (shot out of focus, then gradually becomes in focus relating to the dream sequence, and the lead singer’s disorientation)

Lead singer nearly catches Tracey as she slows down to meet him however she becomes slightly transparent, almost ghost like. SC into a CU of their hands almost touching.

SC back to the real world (lead singer is sitting down where the music video began) A slow pan to the left to show the female reading a novel; she tilts her head up to catch the eye of the lead singer.

We will get a few people to look at this treatment and then review it in light of their comments.
